Zero 2 A Hundred

As an avid volunteer and supporter of law enforcement I have had the opportunity to meet some very fine officers over the years.  I recently attended the book signing/fundraiser for Jason Roy’s novel “Zero 2 a Hundred” who also created the foundation bearing the same name.  When I met Jason several years ago, I became an instant fan.  His story touched my heart and his courage and triumph through unimaginable pain and struggle inspired me.

In 1994 Jason miraculously survived a crash where he was hit by a drunk driver and pronounced dead on the scene.  His injuries consisted of a broken pelvis and legs, damage to his frontal lobe, and his lungs nearly collapsed.  His hospital stay was followed by several months of intense rehabilitation and physical therapy.  The damage to his legs was so severe that the doctors were concerned he wouldn’t be able to play sports again.  Despite the injuries and pain, Jason fought his way back to a full recovery and in 2006 joined the Houston Police Department.

On May 3, 2011, in the line of duty, Jason was involved in a high speed chase that ended with his police car flipping several times and landing in a ditch.  The crash left Jason paralyzed from the neck down and on life support.  In the days following he underwent multiple surgeries and suffered a major stroke. His injuries included five broken vertebrae in his spine, five fractured bones in his back, a broken sternum, two broken ribs and countless other injuries.

After two near-fatal crashes, Jason’s love for his baby boy motivated him, and his faith became the foundation to fight his way back a second time.  Jason wrote “there were so many days when I didn’t know if I would make it.  During those times it was almost impossible to see God’s vision and purpose for my life, but today I know that every obstacle and challenge that I faced in the past and those I still encounter on a daily basis are worth it. I am confident that my experiences and testimony will profoundly impact the lives of others and ultimately help bring them closer to God.  And for that I am thankful!”

When I think about Jason and the insurmountable challenges he has faced and championed with faith, determination, and hard work, I feel blessed to be able to call him my friend.

Jason’s “Zero 2 a Hundred Foundation” is dedicated to improving the quality of life of children and adolescents suffering from brain and/or spinal cord injuries by providing financial resources and information to ensure they receive the quality rehabilitative treatment necessary to maximize their ability to function and live as independently as possible.
