The Sterling Mansion

photograph of Sterling Mansion

The Sterling Mansion was built between 1914 and 1917 by Ross Shaw Sterling where he lived with his wife Maud Abbie Gage Sterling and their five children until 1926. In 1983 the building was entered in the National Register of Historic Places.

Mr. Sterling was one of the founders of Humble Oil and Refining Company in 1917 (now known as Exxon), and served as Governor of Texas from 1931-1933.

The style of the mansion is described as an abstract art-nouveau rendition of classical details. Of particular architectural interest is the spectacular front porch which was added in 1919 by architect Alfred C. Finn. The porch was designed by architect H. Jordan MacKenzie, whose signature cartouche appears above the front steps.

Several prominent families occupied the Sterling Mansion as a residence until 1987, when a Houston attorney converted the house to a law office. The Law Office of Howard Nations purchased the mansion in 1998 and is continuing with the restoration and the preservation of this historic site.

There's no place like (a) home for a law firm with character
