Hydroxycut is the brand name of a line of weight-loss products. They are marketed as a dietary supplement for people who want to lose weight and are also used by body-builders who want to sharpen their muscles.

On May 1, 2009, the FDA issued public health warnings and warnings to healthcare providers about Hydroxycut products citing 23 reported cases of serious injuries and one death associated with their use. Even people with no pre-existing medical conditions have needed liver transplants after taking Hydroxycut. The following injuries have been reported:

Elevated liver enzymes and jaundice (indicating potential liver injury)
Liver damage (sometimes requiring a liver transplant)
Liver failure
Death due to liver failure
Seizures
Cardiovascular disorders (from heart palpitations to heart attacks)
Rhabdomyolysis (muscle damage that can lead to kidney failure)

Although the manufacturer began to receive reports of these injuries 7 years ago, they failed to adequately protect or warn the public until now. On the day the FDA warnings were issued, the manufacturer Iovate Health Sciences announced a nationwide recall of the following 14 products. The products bear either the Iovate or Muscletech brand name.
